Dispatch: New York’s Biggest Art Weekend

New York City’s contemporary art world is constantly transforming — within the historic district of Chelsea alone, there are more than 350 world-class art galleries and exhibition spaces. That’s a lot of ground to cover! But three recent shows — The Armory Show, The Fountain Art Fair, and The Verge, offer a great overview of the art world as it lives now. Every March 3^rd through 6^th, NewYork City plays host to the hippest collection of art fairs known to man. Its called Armory Week and if you play your cards right you can catch some of the best artist and art dealers in the world all at once.

The centerpiece of this creative cluster is of course the Armory Show, serving up over 300 blue chip galleries showcasing the best of the best for sale and celebration. The Armory Show is the largest and most prestigious art fair in the world divided into two parts – Modern and Contemporary, so whether it’s a newfound appreciation for the next generation of conceptual art stars or if your looking for a classic investment in the masters of bygone days, this art fair has literally something for everyone to walk away with.

Biblical in origin, the sukkah is an ephemeral, elemental shelter, erected for one week each fall, in which it is customary to share meals, entertain, sleep, and rejoice.

Ostensibly the sukkah's religious function is to commemorate the temporary structures that the Israelites dwelled in during their exodus from Egypt, but it is also about universal ideas of transience and permanence as expressed in architecture. The sukkah is a means of ceremonially practicing homelessness, while at the same time remaining deeply rooted. It calls on us to acknowledge the changing of the seasons, to reconnect with an agricultural past, and to take a moment to dwell on--and dwell in--impermanence.

Historically, the sukkah's permanent recurrence is not as a monument, archetype, or typology, but as a set of precise parameters. The basic constraints seem simple: the structure must be temporary, have at least two and a half walls, be big enough to contain a table, and have a roof made of shade-providing organic materials through which one can see the stars. Yet a deep dialogue of historical texts intricately refines and interprets these constraints--arguing, for example, for a 27 x 27 x 38-inch minimum volume; for a maximum height of 30 feet; for walls that cannot sway more than one handbreadth; for a mineral and botanical menagerie of construction materials; and even, in one famous instance, whether it is kosher to adaptively reuse a recently deceased elephant as a wall. (It is.) The paradoxical effect of these constraints is to produce a building that is at once new and old, timely and timeless, mobile and stable, open and enclosed, homey and uncanny, comfortable and critical.

'Sukkah City' is an international design competition to re-imagine this ancient phenomenon, develop new methods of material practice and parametric design, and propose radical possibilities for traditional design constraints in a contemporary urban site. Twelve finalists were selected by a panel of celebrated architects, designers, and critics to be constructed in a visionary village in Union Square Park from September 19-20, 2010.

One structure will be chosen by New Yorkers to stand and delight throughout the week-long festival of Sukkot as the People's Choice Sukkah of New York City. The process and results of the competition, along with construction documentation and critical essays, will be published in the forthcoming book "Sukkah City: Radically Temporary Architecture for the Next Three Thousand Years."

Selected entries will also be displayed in an exhibit at the Center for Architecture in New York City during September 2010.

Convergence NYC Art Benefit to Help Operation Homefront –Aug. 27-29 NYC Artists Benefit Supports Military Service Members

New York City, NY-Artist from across the world converge in NYC to present an epic exhibition benefitting families who have lost loved ones due to the Afghan and Iraq wars. CONVERGENCE NYC will be presenting art to the public, Aug. 27th –29th , at the Historic 69th Fighting Regiment’s Armory located at 68 Lexington Ave & 25th St. During these three days the public is invited to enjoy art and live music, while getting the unique opportunity to meet and mingle with the over 70 participating artists. Fifty percent of all sales will be donated to the NY/NJ chapter of Operation Homefront.

Operation Homefront provides emergency, financial and other assistance to the families of our service members and wounded warriors. A national nonprofit, Operation Homefront leads more than 4,500 volunteers across 23 chapters and has met more than 267,000 needs since 2002. With over 70 Artist and Performers, CONVERGENCE NYC is going to be an exhibition of grand artistic proportions.

Venue History: The 1913 Armory Show The downtown 25th St. and Lexington Ave. Armory was the site of the historic 1913 “Armory Show” in which Picasso, Duchamp, Matisse, and many other world renowned visionary artists’ premiered their ground-breaking works, which changed art history forever. CONVERGENCE NYC draws inspiration from the rawness of this historic event and blends it with today’s edgy aesthetic. Everywhere Theatre Group attempts to stage the World Wide Web in The Internet. Fusing dance,
movement, video, music, original and found texts, ETG examines what lies beneath the cool,
sleek surface of the information super highway. By asking what propels people into the shadowy
underworld of the Web, where one desires to objectify bodies and see people fail, ETG aims to
find the root of human connection at its newest form.
Everywhere Theatre Group is Leah Winkler, Chase Voorhees, Teddy Nicholas and Lindsay
Mack. Since 2008, they have produced plays at Dixon Place (Untitled- A Play), The Ontological-
Hysteric Incubator (Sintesi Dogpile Show, A Pale Horse, Death and Hell Followed With…),
Wings Theater (Big Girls Club), The Brick Theater (Happy Dance Dance Princess Show!), HERE
Arts Center (The Formula Play) and Bar on A (Way of the Word in collaboration with Republic
Worldwide). They were 2008/2009 Resident Artists with the Ontological-Hysteric Incubator
Short Form Series for the development of A Pale Horse, Death & Hell Followed With (A Lifetime
Original Series), which received its world premiere in December 2009.
About Incubator Arts Project
The Incubator Arts Project supports independent, experimental performing artists through a
series of programs aimed at offering production opportunities and guidance with long-term growth
and artistic sustainability. Its programs primarily support world premieres of original work and also
include a concert series, work in progress opportunities and artist salons and roundtables.
The Incubator Arts Project grew out of the Incubator, a project of the Ontological-Hysteric
Theater. In 2010, the Ontological-Hysteric Theater announced that it would leave its permanent
home, St. Mark’s Church, and that the Incubator would take over the space and operate year-
round.
Beginning in 1993, the Ontological-Hysteric Theater, in addition to its primary support of the
work of Richard Foreman, opened its doors to emerging, independent artists. Since 1993
the emerging artists program at the Ontological took many forms, including the Obie-winning
Blueprint Series for emerging directors. In 2005, the OHT reorganized the programs under the
name INCUBATOR, creating a series of linked programs to provide young theater artists with
resources and support to develop process-oriented, original theatrical productions. By 2010, the
program had quadrupled in size, involving a range of artists and increased support. The programs
included the centerpiece Residency program for premieres, two annual music festivals, a regular
concert series, a serial work-in-progress program called Short Form, and roundtables and salons
aimed at keeping Incubator artists involved year-round. In May, 2010, the Incubator received an
OBIE grant.

Beyond Models of Consensus @ EYEBEAM June 10, 2010

Last night June 10, Upgrade! NY and Not An Alternative, united forces to present their newest innovative exhibition and panel discussion atEyebeam ’s behemoth show space at 540 West 21^s. Re:Group: Beyond Models of Consensus, is an exhibition, which examines models of participation and participation as a model in art and activism. So here’s what’s going down- The show is ultimately about work that subverts existing systems or envisions new alternatives to the ways in which individuals can take part, or choose not to take part, in social and cultural life. What you wouldn’t expect is the subtle sense of humor that pervades the entire show. White Glove Tracking is an interactive computer based piece by Evan Roth and Ben Engebreth, which requires audience participation to isolate Michael Jackson’s infamous bejeweled glove, which has been edited to appear ridiculously enlarged on his hand as he twirls and moon walks through a looping clip from a performance of Billy Jean. There are six monitors with various visual interpretations of the data that is being collected but it was undetermined if these were pre recorded or responding directly to audience interaction. Wildly entertaining though, if even if you are left wondering what just happened as you chuckle to yourself and walk away. Just across the room in what looks like a post apocalyptic plywood Winnebago, Christopher Robbins, John Ewing, and Carmen Montoya have created Ghana Think Tank. Here is a unique idea that is simple enough that you could have thought of it yourself but you didn’t. Lets take some big thinkers and regular folks and build think tanks in third world foreign countries like Ghana, Cuba, Serbia and El Salvador to brainstorm potential solutions to first world problems in countries like the United States. That makes sense right? As you enter into the space you cant help but wonder if you should be offended or if this is a joke but sure enough there are monitors haphazardly drilled into the walls inside with videos of the third world think tanks in progress, mostly complaining about the people of the united states but often stumbling upon a few pretty good ideas for us to seriously consider. It’s worth taking the time to watch all the videos and I recommend striking up a debate about the whole purpose of this project with any passer bye. Everyone I spoke with seemed to be eager to throw their two cents in. In addition to the many other projects by some of the most talented tech based artists in the craft, the Bring Back the WPA project by Christopher Robbins, who is believes that if the government wont help us then it is up to us to do for ourselves, is an other idea to take seriously. Although the show is not entirely cohesive and you can tell that perhaps there were too many curators in the kitchen I plan on going back this week to get a little more familiar with the pieces and attend some of the associated events that follow up the show throughout the next month;

Video Art Festival Miden invites all video artists and video creators to participate in this year’s events, which will take place, like the past five years, in public spaces at the Historic Centre of the city of Kalamata, Greece, in July 2010.

The festival call is open to every creator (individuals, groups or organizations) of any nationality and background.

The proposed video can be of any genre (video art, experimental video, animation, short movie etc.). Duration under 10 min.

There is no entry fee.

On April 12th, 2010, friends, family, and fans of theater along with new and repeat guests from the first Way of the Word: Poems to Plays packed Bar on A to see the encore performances of Pages from a Course in General Linguistics (by Lonely Christopher, directed by Teddy Nicholas), Scrabble or Nietzsche (by Marissa Forbes, directed by Chase Voorhees), and Big Talk (by Katie Przybylski, directed by Leah Winkler).

It was an honor working with Everywhere Theatre Group and I would like to not only thank the directors/founders of ETG but also T. Ramon Campbell, Tricia Cramer, and Kristopher W. Imperati, Dan Whalen, Mary Hynes, David Weinheimer, Nikki Dillon, Rachel Pearl, and Gary Ferrer for transforming the poems into exceptional works theater.

A special thanks to Bar on A for opening up their great space to us and allowing REPUBLIC and ETG the freedom to transform the space into a wonderful place to perform and bring people together to share their love of words.

REPUBLIC thanks Everywhere Theatre Group

So often the word is not considered a form of visual art, rather a limited form of emotional expression. The word, in any manifestation, crosses numerous mediums and passions; not only can writing transform one’s thoughts on any subject but it can transcend concepts of life itself. REPUBLIC Worldwide generated the “Way of the Word” program to represent the energy of words in many forms. Poetry was a fitting place to begin but REPUBLIC Worldwide possesses the goal to continue to adapt, revolutionize and spread the love of all embodiments of the word, thus the birth of “Poems to Plays.” Marissa Forbes wanted to expose the accessibility of poetry by adapting three original poems from the event anthology into three one-act plays and the featured poets, Lonely Christopher and Katie Przybylski, were excited for the chance to join Forbes in morphing their poetry into visual enactments. The main concept for “Way of the Word” is that words can take any direction and make any connection, so each poem-to-play speaks to the relationship between influential linguists, philosophers, and poets to our modern day appreciation of the art of the word. REPUBLIC Worldwide was honored that the talented and gracious members of Everywhere Theatre Group wanted to collaborate on this project. The actors and directors have put in exceptional efforts and the dual event was a wild success and we look forward to creating “Way of the Word” events that show how the word can morph and move in any/all directions.

Peter Steele, Type O Negative Singer, Dead At 48-Drew Kassl

TYPE O NEGATIVE manager Mike Renault has confirmed to CBS News that the band's frontman, Peter Steele, has died. In an email, Renault said, "Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That's all the details we have right now."

According to unconfirmed reports, Steele had been ill for days leading up to his death.

TYPE O NEGATIVE's web site left a message to their fans this morning around 5:15 a.m. It read, "The forums have been re-opened. Please play nice and expect statements from the band and family later today. Thank you for your understanding and support."

Steele was born Petrus T. Ratajczyk on January 4, 1962 in Brooklyn, New York. He stood 6' 7" (201 cm) tall, and had a low, bass-heavy voice, which was one of the most recognizable features in TYPE O NEGATIVE's music.

Before forming TYPE O NEGATIVE, Steele played for the metal group FALLOUT and the thrash band CARNIVORE. [Blabbermouth]

Type O Negative's final tour ran from October 16, 2009 at Starland Ballroom to Halloween in Detroit, Michigan. The NYC show took place October 22nd at Nokia Theatre (right in the middle of CMJ). Two days after that they played a show at Northern Lights in Clifton Park, New York. That's where HardTimes.Ca caught up with Pete Steele for a revealing video interview that included such topics as Pete's recent sobriety and religion. In it they discuss why Josh Silver wasn't playing keyboards on that particular tour. Pete says, Josh was too busy with his family and working on his "plan b". "He's smart. I wouldn't depend on me 6 months ago either." It ends with the "final words" quoted above. A must watch for any Type O and Carnivore fan - especially in light of today's tragic news. Geoffrey Jacques will read from his groundbreaking book A Change in the Weather: Modernist Imagination, African American Imaginary. This latest book answers the question “What happens when we put African American expressive culture at the center of modernism?”* Geoffrey Jacques received his PhD in English from The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) and currently teaches in the Writing Program at York College, CUNY. He has published three collections of poetry, including Just for a Thrill.

E.J. Antonio will read new poems and a selection from her chapbook Every Child Knows. E.J. Antonio is a 2009 fellow in Poetry from the New York Foundation for the Arts and a recipient of fellowships from the Hurston/Wright Foundation and the Cave Canem Foundation.
Her work has been published in Black Renaissance/Renaissance Noire, The Mom Egg Literary Journal, and Torch among others. She is one of the featured poets on the CD, Beauty Keeps Laying It’s Sharp Knife Against Me: Brant Lyon and Friends.

JoAnne McFarland, and writers E.J. Antonio, Gretta Keene and William Murray, will read the shape shifting poems from Acid Rain.

Acid Rain received Honorable Mention in the inaugural 2009 Cave Canem Northwestern University Press Second Book Award. The complete collection is available on CD with music composed by William Murray. JoAnne McFarland has art works in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Columbus Museum of Art, and the Department of State among others. She is also the author of The Glassblower’s Tale and Fossil Fuel.

A389 Records have released their new label sampler, downloadable to one and all, with some fierce and antisocial hardcore, a good portion of which is currently unreleased. The free comp features faves like Integrity, Pulling Teeth (the previously discussed "Grudgeholder") Gehenna, Ringworm, Seraphim (we posted one track, a second appears on the comp), Gluttons (the previously posted "Point Break"), The Love Below, Triac, Hatewaves (we posted one track, includes a second hilarious track "Facebook Abuser"), Oak... the list goes on and on. One of the more notable bands (that I didn't just rattle off) from that compilation is the Fucked Up side project known as Millenial Reign:

After five years of promising each other that they would start a "clevo" style band [ED: as in Cleveland hardcore like Integrity, Ringworm, Pale Creation, etc] one day, Jordan (ex No Warning) and Damian (Fucked Up) finally just said fuck it and did it with the help of Jesse (ex No Warning). This band is about old friends getting together and playing heavy music again.

The project is not a new one though. According to A389 label head (and Pulling Teeth guitarist) Dom who said that the recording "was supposed to come out years ago on another label but fell through the cracks." Fucked Up played a bunch of shows at SXSW including the BrooklynVegan day party at Emo's on 3/17, the previously mentioned surprise show on Beerland's patio on 3/18, and the MWTX Party on the rainy/freezing Saturday (3/20) (with Gwar). REPUBLIC Worldwide-in collaboration with ETG-opening night of "Way of the Word: Poems to Plays": Success!

REPUBLIC Worldwide—in collaboration with Everywhere Theatre Group—presented the first installment of “Poems to Plays,” the second “Way of the Word” event, on Monday April 5^th, 2010. Bar on A was filled to the brim with old and new friends, all eager to see the adaptations of three poems from the first annual REPUBLIC poetry anthology into three one-act plays. It was an amazing time for all and everyone left very pleased with the night, so come to our encore event April 12^th, 2010, 8-11pm at Bar on A.

First up was the experimental play, Pages From a Course in General Linguistics, adapted from For Example by Lonely Christopher and directed by Teddy Nicholas. T. Ramon Campbell performed his monologue regarding the concept of linguistics with passion and poise while Tricia Cramer progressed from a beautiful secretary into a frightful femme fatal and then Kristopher W. Imperati gave it his all with his dueling monologue about the insanity and humor of language.

Next up was Scrabble (or Nietzsche) by Marissa Forbes, adapted from the poem of the same name, directed by Chase Voorhees. It’s a philosophical comedy that literally plays with words and thought. Dan Whalen was an excellent Friedrich Nietzsche—full of insightful wittiness and Mary Hynes was a hilarious Scrabble opponent.

The performances concluded with Katie Przybylski’s poem adapted into her play, Big Talk, directed by Leah Winkler. David Weinheimer, Nikki Dillon, Rachel Pearl, and Gary Ferrer performed their romantic search on the subway for Walt Whitman with zeal in their cascading voices.

Support Create For A Cause

Tomorrow is the 16th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. In memory of the one million people who were killed, Create for a Cause would like to raise money for food and school fees for the children at Gisimba Orphanage. The genocide left thousands upon thousands orphaned and Gisimba Orphanage was one of the few sanctuaries during that time, saving over 400 children. Gisimba currently houses approximately 200 kids ranging from babies to teens while supporting an additional 100 who are in foster care. Ten years ago, almost all were genocide victims, but many of the newer arrivals have been orphaned by AIDS. Because their parents were HIV+, a number of the orphans are also infected.

100% of the t-shirt sale proceeds will go towards food and school fees at Gisimba Orphanage. The goal is to raise $4000 for Gisimba Orphanage.
We received more of Jon Theiss' previously sold-out, popular t-shirt design in more colors! Thanks to Save Khaki for donating the super-soft tees and to Lincoln Mayne for volunteering to silkscreen them.

We are also currently raising more funds for AFEM, South Kivu's Women Media Association which focuses on reporting on sexual violence in the Democratic Repubic of Congo and have a few more tees available too!

Katie Przybylski

Katie Przybylski (shuh-bil-skee) (Playwright) hails from Michigan, where she grew up among many automobiles and squirrels. She currently studies and writes in Brooklyn, New York. Her work has appeared in Ubiquitous, Correspondence, and Way of the Word, and is forthcoming in Xenith, and Mosaic49. This is the first play she's written, she wishes you well.

Leah Winkler

Leah Winkler (Director) is a writer/director from Kamakura, Japan and Lexington, Kentucky. In addition to working with ETG- she is the A/P/A commissioned writer for the Japanese American National Museum’s Discover Nikkei project. She has directed her plays at the Ontological Hysteric Theater ( Pale Horse…6 Speed-cowriter), The Brick Theater (Big Girls Club- Happy Dance Dance Princess Show), HERE Arts Center (The Formula Play) and the Indianapolis New Art Theatre( Everywhere). Her short plays have been seen at the Cultural Development Corporation’s Source Festival (little girls- dir Scott Fortier) , Workingman’s Clothes Productions’(BGC-Dir.Teddy Nicholas). She has also worked with the Asian American Arts Alliance and Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company. Come see her read at the Southern Writers Reading Series on April 14th 8 p.m. at Happy Ending Lounge, 302 Broome Street between Forsyth & Eldridge.

David Weinheimer

David Weinheimer (1) is thrilled to be working with REPUBLIC Worldwide for the first time. A 2005 graduate from Butler University with a BA in Theatre, after graduating David spent a year and a half on tour with Missoula Children's Theatre, doing both "Jack and the Beanstalk" (Magic) and "Frog Prince" (Henry/King). David can be seen most weekends here in New York performing at the National Comedy Theatre as part of the house improv team. Other recent New York credits include: "The Tempest" (Stephano) and "Twelfth Night" (Valentine) with Theatre1010, "Merchant of Venice" (Gratiano) with Hudson Shakespeare, "Pericles" (Helicanus/Antiochus) with Hudson Warehouse, and staged readings of "Tymon of Athens" (Flavius) and "Henry VIII" (Henry VIII) with Instant Shakespeare. Nikki Dillon

Nikki Dillon (2) originally hales from Atlanta, GA and moved to New York to study performance and pursue a career in acting. She attended Hofstra University and received a BFA in theatre performance. In her first year living in the city she has appeared in Holly Down in Heaven at New Dramatists, The Daughter at Theatroiati, Synesthesia 2009 at The Electric Pear, and The Twelfth Labor at Lark Play Development Center. She has previously appeared as COMPUTER in ETG’s A Pale Horse…. Some of her other favorite roles are Marie Duplesis in Camille, and Austin in True West.

Rachel Pearl

Rachel Pearl (3) is an actor/singer/writer originally from Issaquah, Washington. She previously played a COMPUTER in ETG’s Pale Horse…at the Ontological. She holds a BFA in Theatre Arts from Hofstra University. Credits include: The Winter’s Tale (Paulina), Into the Woods (Baker’s Wife), Equus (Dora Strang) The Fantasticks (Louisa).

Gary Ferrer

Gary Ferrar (4) is a writer, director, and entertainer currently living in Brooklyn. He holds a B.A. in Theater Arts and English from Hofstra University and is a recipient of the Philip Rosenthal Grant for comedy in theater. Gary serves as as the artistic director for The Hyper Aware Ventilation Company where he is currently working on “Time Traveling with Cannibals.” Much thanks to Leah and Lindsay for this opportunity to work with ETG!

Marissa Forbes

Marissa Forbes (Playwright/Way of the Word: Poems to Play Producer) is a lover of words. Born in Colorado, she has transplanted her self in various cities around the country and finally made a permanent home in Brooklyn NY. Graduating from Pratt Institute in the Writing for Publication, Performance, and Mass Media program in 2008 has opened doors to publishing poems in Imitation Fruit and flash fiction in Language and Culture, as well as compiling and editing the first annual REPUBLIC Worldwide "Way of the Word" poetry anthology. Forbes is the Blog Editor/Project Assistant/Director of the Way of the Word Program for REPUBLIC Worldwide, she is currently editing her hybrid novel, Baby is my Business, for self-publication in 2011, and preparing for her attendance in the Media Studies graduate program at The New School University. She is honored to be working with the talented actors and directors of Everywhere Theatre Group and looks forward to many more opportunities to expand her writing and new media experiences in the future.

Chase Voorhees

Chase Voorhees (Director) is a Brooklyn based writer/director/photographer/videographer/editor/composer/designer/jack of all trades who is originally from Logansport, Indiana. He is a founding member and co-artistic director for Everywhere Theater Group. He has served many roles in all of ETG’s productions, such as co-director, sound designer, videographer, and promotional designer. ETG credits include: “A Pale Horse, Death Hell…” at Ontological-Hysteric, “Big Girls Club: The Formula Play” at HERE Arts Center, “A Pale Horse, Death, Hell…(Office, Love, Horror, Faith) at ShortForm’s Ontological-Hysteric, “Big Girls Club (Happy Happy Dance Dance Princess Show!) at The Brick Theatre, “Big Girls Club” at the Working Man’s Theatre, and has also presented work at Dixon Place, and with Ontological’s Sintesi Dogpile. Chase currently works at DuArt Film & Video, and wears many hats, including editor, restorationist, audio technician, the list goes on. He currently serves as online editor and opening sequence editor for “Pokémon” and has worked with such clients as The Guggenheim Museum, Wolfgang’s Vault (wolfgangsvault.com), Pokémon, Fred Armisen, and various bands. Chase is also a musician and records his own music – many of his songs, as well as photographs, videos, and reels can be found on his website, chasevoorhees.com.

Dan Whalen

Dan Whalen (Friedrich Nietzsche) is a social worker currently living in Manhattan by way of Grand Rapids, MI. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 2008 after studying political science and theatre and appearing in productions such as Henry IV Part I, Noises Off!, The Photographer, and Stop Kiss. He was most recently involved in Everywhere Theatre Group's production of A Pale Horse... at the Ontological-Hysteric Theatre, and was also involved in OHT's 2009 short-form series in Eric Magnus' What is Wild. He is very excited and honored at the same time to be working with Everywhere Theatre Group once again and with REPUBLIC Worldwide for the first time.

Mary Hynes

Mary Hynes (Lizzy White) is a storyteller and aspiring comedienne from Hagerstown, Maryland. She graduated from Butler University with a BA in theatre. Some of the highlights of her collegiate experience were studying theatre under Alexander and Tamara Anisimov of the Alexandrinsky theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, an international Grotowski intensive in Cork, Ireland, and being able to study under many wonderful theatre practitioners from around the world. She has been a New Yorker for 2 years and is loving the ride. She can be seen on stage at Gotham City Improv performing improv every weekend. She would like to thank Dan, Marissa, and Chase for being such creative joys on this project!

REPUBLIC Worldwide Volunteers for PATH's Easter Egg Hunt at Ft. Greene Park

Saturday March 27th was a chilly a morning but the sun was bright and REPUBLIC Worldwide was excited to volunteer for PATH's (Parents Around The Hill) Fort Greene Easter Egg Hunt. Our Charity Director, Jason Isch, geared up in the bunny suit and was off to lead the parade, cut the string for the egg hunt, and of course take pictures with all the sugared-up little kiddies of Clinton Hill and Ft. Greene. Jason Voegele organized the very limited slots for photos with the bunny, Marissa Forbes assisted at the raffle table, Shaakir Thomas (REPUBLIC Worldwide's intern) helped with the set-up and clean-up, and Sean McGurn was there to capture all the fun.

REPUBLIC Worldwide is proud to continue having opportunities to help out around our local community. It was a wildly successful event and we had a blast meeting all the parents who are making strides in bettering the Brooklyn neighborhood. It's always a pleasure to work with children and help build memories.

A Play On Words.

Lonely Christopher

Lonely Christopher (Playwright) writes outside and across forms. His documents include poetry, fiction, dramatic work, and blog posts. His first collection of short fiction, The Mechanics of Homosexual Intercourse, is forthcoming in 2011 from Akashic’s Little House on the Bowery imprint, edited by Dennis Cooper. Into, a collection of long-form verse with Robert Snyderman and Christopher Sweeney, will be released early this year from Seven Circles Press. His poetry was first collected in the chapbook Satan by Small Anchor Press (2007); Small Anchor also released Gay Plays (2009), the first two plays in a trilogy of linguistic investigations into the queer situation, and later published the title in a Mandarin translation. His second poetry collection Wow, Where Do You Come from, Upside-Down Land? was released as part of The Corresponding Society’s “No Know” chapbook series (2009, out of print). This title was a conceptual and political treatment of the contemporary dialogue on gay rights; novelist James Hannaham wrote that the volume’s “anti-poetic poetry shows us the heights of pathos and the depths of foolishness around the issue, while delightfully mixing sexuality with textuality.” Christopher is a founding member of The Corresponding Society, its blog manager, and an editor of its biannual literary journal Correspondence. He curated The Corresponding Society’s second series of chapbooks, “What Where” (forthcoming in Spring), including titles by Robert Fitterman and Anselm Berrigan. He is also a founding member of The Institutionalized Theater, a writer-based company in Brooklyn, and has written and directed many dramatic scenarios for the group. His original plays, including his Gay Play trilogy, have been produced in New York City and ChengDu, China. He tried to direct the Bad Quarto of Hamlet in 2008, which ended in titanic failure. That same year he worked with playwright Mac Wellman on the production of his play 1965UU starring Paul Lazar. His writing has appeared in the anthologies The Physical Poets Home Library and Way of the Word. He is currently collaborating with composer Reese Revak on an opera. Teddy Nicholas

Teddy Nicholas (Director) is a playwright, director, and stage manager from in Queen, NY. He was a Dixon Place HOT! Festival Artist from ‘07-‘08 where he wrote and performed a solo piece, STDs – Socially Transmitted Dissociation, and wrote and directed UNTITLED. He performed in 365 Days/365 Plays at HERE Arts Center and The Public Theater under the direction of Lenora Champagne. He directed the Wadsworth award-winning production of Christopher Shinn’s Four at Purchase College, where he earned a B.A. Drama Studies. He directed Big Girls Club (Workingman’s Clothes BINGE Festival at Wings Theater). Teddy co-wrote/directed with Leah Winkler A Pale Horse, Death & Hell Followed With (A Lifetime Original Series), a show developed from the Ontological-Hysteric Theater’s Incubator Short Form series. Brendan Byrne

Brendan Byrne (Sound Designer) is the current curator of experimental music and mixed media at The Tank, a non-profit performing arts presenter in New York City. He is co-founder and co-producer of the In/Out Festival (http://www.inoutfest.org), a day-long event featuring workshops and performances by leaders in the computer music industry. Brendan also curates the annual circuit-bending festival, Bent Fest (http://www.bentfestival.org). T. Ramon Campbell

T. Ramón Campbell (A) A small town boy from Ossining, NY, with roots in Tuskegee, AL and Jarrett, VA, Ramón grew up an active participant of the theatre arts in his community, playing in high school productions of The King and I, Bye Bye Birdie and Gypsy. Furthering his education at SUNY Purchase College, Ramón earned a B.A. in Literature/Drama Studies and wrote, produced, directed and performed in his first original work. In Denver, CO he achieved an MFA in acting, at the National Theatre Conservatory. As an apprentice with the Denver Center Theatre Company, Ramón had the honor of performing in such classics as The Tempest, Dream, On Monkey Mountain, The Women of Trachis, The Importance of Being Ernest, Bus Stop, Le Misanthrope and Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde. Recently, Ramón played Joe in the Wadsworth Award-winning production of Christopher Shinn’s Four, directed by Teddy Nicholas. He played Luke in Everywhere Theatre Group’s production of A Pale Horse, Death & Hell Followed With (A Lifetime Original Series) at the Ontological-Hysterical Theater. Ramón is honored to have the opportunity to join REPUBLIC Worldwide and The Everywhere Theatre Group in this project.

Tricia Cramer

Tricia Cramer (B) is very excited to be working with Teddy Nicholas, whom she originally met while studying at SUNY Purchase. She performed in 365 Days/365 Plays at HERE Arts Center and The Public Theater under the direction of Lenora Champagne. She went on to study drama and film at NYU. She’s performed at The Public Theatre, Pratt, and in various short films. She studies improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. She’s currently developing various concepts for different mediums.

Kristopher W. Imperati

Kristopher W. Imperati (Z) Kristopher W. Imperati is very excited to be a part of this ETG/Republic Worldwide Collaboration. He has previously worked with the director on his productions Orphans and Woyzeck. His most recent work was a stint with the International Brain Trust, inc. His credits with them include Transplants: tiny plays, Mechanically Separated Meat, Blue Monday Summies, and Double Suicides: Non-Refundable Services. He is currently completing work writing a one-act play about Natalie Portman building a pipe-bomb to help a lonely retail clerk recover from a recent and painful breakup.

Every so often we get a chance to read a great author, hear a moving poet, see the performance of a memorable theatrical work or debate a sincere philosophical hypothesis. Here in the realm of language and communication, the words we use to interpret our shared world are sorted, arranged and made malleable by the imagination and revolutionizing spirit of the creator. To overlook this fundamental thread that is woven into the nature of theater, poetry, philosophy and other expressive forms of the written word is to fall short of any deeper true appreciation of the artists’ intention.

It is in the spirit of pushing the boundaries of language and celebrating the power of the word that REPUBLIC Worldwide, in collaboration with Everywhere Theatre Group presents: Way of the Word: Poems to Plays.

The first installment of REPUBLIC Worldwide presents: Way of the Word featured readings by poets inspired by timeless thinkers such as Saussure, Nietzsche and Walt Whitman. In an attempt to expound on the creative vision and unique interpretations of these renown masters of language, three of those original poems from Way of the Word have been transformed into three one act plays by the of the original authors. Produced by Marissa Forbes and directed by the founding members of Everywhere Theatre Group, Way of the Word: Poems to Plays, promises to be a unique and entertaining evening of poetic theater beginning with Lonely Christopher’s adaptation of “For Example” into “Pages from a Course in General Linguists” directed by Teddy Nicholas, performed by T. Ramon Campbell, Tricia Cramer, and Kristopher W. Imperati, with sound by Brenden Bryne; followed by Marissa Forbes’ “Scrabble (or Nietzsche)”, directed by Chase Voorhees, performed by Dan Whalen and Mary Hynes, concluding with “Big Talk” by Katie Przybylski, directed by Leah Winkler, performed by David Wienhiemer, Nikki Dillion, Rachel Pearl, and Gary Ferrer.

Doors open at 8pm, performances begin at 8:30. The evening will conclude with a meet and greet with REPUBLIC Worldwide, the playwrights/poets, performers, and directors.

Way of the Word’s first poetry anthology, featuring the poems transformed into plays and poems from around the nation will be available for purchase online and at the door for $10. Portions of the proceeds will be donated to Reading Excellence and Discovery (READ), a foundation that promotes literacy by pairing qualified high school tutors with elementary students who demonstrate below grade level reading skills.

REPUBLIC Worldwide presented Great Expectations, the final event of our four tier project with Cooke's Center for Learning and Development, on Tuesday March 9, 2010 at PS122. Students, parents, teachers, and friends started to trickle in before the event was scheduled to begin and the gallery was packed up until we had to close the doors around 7:30.

To say the night was a success is an understatement, it was an incredibly emotional and exciting night for all who attended. Everyone was filled with pride as the amazing students of Cooke Center walked through the gallery, realizing they are real artists and can accomplish anything they dream of. Never before has REPUBLIC Worldwide witnessed so many expressions of true joy and delight while looking at art.

The outsider artists from Pure Vision were inspiring; through each piece students saw the potential of their own work. The room was vivid with color and the pop culture characters by Stephan Kramer were a huge hit with everyone.

REPUBLIC Worldwide wants to thank all the teachers and administrators from Cooke Center, specifically Mary Munsch and Ayde Rayas, for giving us the opportunity to work with inspirited students, Pam Rogers from Pure Vision for loaning us stunning pieces for the show, and Susan Schreiber at PS122 for donating the space. Thank you everyone who attended and made this an event that REPUBLIC Worldwide will always remember.

"Great Expectations" is a collaborative group exhibition featuring Jessica Park, Susan Brown and Stephen Kramer on loan from Pure Vision Arts in Chelsea and new work by the students of the Cooke Center Academy High School in SoHo. Hosted by P.S.122 Gallery, “Great Expectations” is an opportunity to ponder and explore the endless possibilities from which we build our futures.

This exhibition is the final project of a six month continuing project grant by Republic Worldwide to benefit the Cooke Center Academy High School in SoHo. The Cooke Center Academy High School is a branch of the Cooke Center for Learning and Development which is an educational institution working specifically with children who are challenged by developmental disorders such as down syndrome and the various extremes of the autism spectrum. Pure Vision Arts(PVA) is Manhattan's first specialized art studio for adult artists with developmental disabilities. Republic Worldwide is proud to bring these two important institutions together for the first time.

The night of Monday February 22, 2010 was full of laughs as REPUBLIC filed in comedy lovers to enjoy the first Monday Stand up Comedy night. The comedians rocked the house and guests walked out of Bar on A with abs a little more rock hard from all the laughter.

The drinks flowed and the laughs were heard on the streets. If you missed this show, it sucks for you, but fear not! REPUBLIC is going to switch the Monday for Thursday (because we know by Thursday everyone needs a little comedy to relieve the stress of the week). Early on in life we begin to know ourselves through our dreams and aspirations. It is through our imaginations that we first engage the process of self-discovery and set out on the life long path toward our future selves. Sometimes our youthful vision of the person we might become seems fantastical and improbable, sometimes our path seems perfectly clear cut and sometimes it requires a leap of faith. Whatever the case, exploring ideas about who we are and who we want to become teaches us to develop valuable skills that cultivate the fertile creative ground upon which our futures are built. As young aspiring artists we test our gifts and learn to trust our own ideas as we navigate a course through the challenges of developing our own unique voice. Even as seasoned artists we never cease to imagine the future and where the great mystery of life might take us.

It is in this spirit that Republic Worldwide, presents “Great Expectations”, a group exhibition opening March 9^th, 2009 at P.S. 122 Gallery to benefit the transition to life program at The Cooke Center for Learning and Development. In the heart of NYC, from February 9th to Feb 12th Grand Central’s
Vandelbilt Hall will be hosting an exhibit on Madrid Unique Art Scene.

Stroll down the Path of Arts as if it was a sunny afternoon in Madrid.

This powerful exhibit consists of a curated selection of reproductions
to scale of the most iconic works currently exhibited at Madrid’s
mayor Museums: The Prado, The Thyssen-Bornemisza and The Reina Sofia.

The pieces represent some of the most important art collections in the
world and this exhibit brings New Yorkers a unique opportunity to peek
inside what Madrid’s art scene has to offer.

Although a reproduction, it is the first time Guernica,
the monumental anti-war mural painted by Pablo Picasso in 1937, will
be shown in New York City since it was returned to Spain by the Museum
of Modern Art in 1981.

Idealist.org is an organization that pairs volunteers with non-profit organizations that are fitting and life-changing for all involved. The website is a fantastic tool and references for students to seniors and they're reaching out to not only members but people who want to help make a social change. They're funding is decreasing and they still want to create all the service they can for those in need.

Here's an open letter from the Director. Please read and find it in your heart to make a donation. At the least, check out the website and see where there is need for you out there. It's the beginning of a new year and we can all open our hearts up to make a better 2010 for the world.

You know how sometimes in life you go through a bad moment, and when
your friends hear about it later, they say, "Why didn't you say
something? Why didn't you ask? We would have helped."

That's where Idealist is now, and I am writing to ask for your help.

Very briefly, here's what happened. Over the past ten years, most of
our funding has come from the small fees we charge organizations for
posting their jobs on Idealist. By September 2008, after years of
steady growth, these little drops were covering 70% of our budget.

Then, in October of that year, the financial crisis exploded, many
organizations understandably froze their hiring, and from one week to
the next our earned income was cut almost in half, leaving us with a
hole of more than $100,000 each month.

That was 16 months ago, and since then we've survived on faith and
fumes, by cutting expenses, and by getting a few large gifts from new
and old friends. But now we are about to hit a wall, and this is why I
am reaching out to you.

Jojo Kuo Afrobeat Experiment plays Le Grand Dakar weekly

REPUBLIC hosted the Gisimba Orphanage Fundraiser at La Grand Dakar back in May 2009 and recently a few members have been making their way back to the African restaurant to enjoy chef Pierre Thaim's amazing cuisine along with some awesome African Jazz music.

The world famous Jojo Kuo Afrobeat Experiment is scheduled to be the Monday night performer through 2010 and into 2011, so you should make your way any or every week. If you check out some of his influential music at MySpace, you'll be hooked.

It’s Sunday January 9th, at dusk, in Union Square and thousands of pantless people have gathered at the end of an epic no pants subway ride. Improv Everywhere’s “No Pants Subway Ride” has now gone global in its 9^th year. The phenomenon of social freedoms was held in 43 cities around the globe. Voluntary participants in New York met at specified meeting points throughout the city where the massive army of 3,000 willing exhibitionists were divided into groups and given the order in which to de-pant in trains throughout the city.

Created in August of 2001 by Charlie Todd, Improve Everywhere causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places. Improve Everywhere has executed over 100 missions involving tens of thousands of undercover agents. The group is based in New York City. You may also know them from people spontaneously freezing in Grand Central Station (http://improveverywhere.com/2008/01/31/frozen-grand-central/ ) or “I Love Lunch” the Musical (http://improveverywhere.com/2009/11/05/i-love-lunch-the-musical/ ).

The spontaneous antics of the group are not only attention grabbing (think Punk’d on a large social scale) but also bring unity and magnetism to a group of total strangers sharing a unique and bizarre experience.

As a participant in this social experience, standing pant less in the subway in the middle of a crowd of other half naked people, all pretending as if nothing out of the ordinary was taking place; it became apparent that we were a part of something larger than ourselves. A prank of sorts, yes, but also a exorcize in fun and freeing personal boundaries.

After an hour trek on multiple designated trains all participants met in Union Square where after hours of straight faced nothings-going-on attitude a joyous party atmosphere erupted. In the train station hundreds of participants danced, even doing the electric slide, as boggled city folk observed. Outside of the station music blasted and the horde of under pant clad people danced and recounted their adventure.

In the bars and restaurants around Union Square men in bottomless business suits and women in dress shoes and thongs meandered about. Though the idea is simple the reaction is phenomenal. As for myself, I can’t wait until next year’s no pants subway ride.

Magrudergrind's new S/T full length was recently named one of Decibel's top 40 albums of 2009. The band is also scheduled to play Hellfest with Godflesh as well as team up with Pulling Teeth when DRI hits Baltimore on 12/13. The date is one of a select few for HopeCon, and the only east coast date scheduled so far. No advanced tickets. Stay tuned for giveaways to what may be the first must-see hardcore show of the new year.

The Hope Conspiracy released the True Nihilist 7" earlier this year on Deathwish. Their last LP was 2006's Death Knows Your Name.

Blacklisted played Santos Party House on 10/24 along with Bane, Maximum Penalty, Cold World, and a host of others as part of the Deathwish - Chronic Youth Day Party at Santos Party House. Blacklisted shares members with the incredible Mother of Mercy who recently played Cake Shop with Iron Age. We profiled Mother of Mercy here.

United Nations is a supergroup of sorts, featuring Thursday's Geoff Rickly playing what is described as "emo powerviolence". The Hopecon show isn't the only one that United Nations has lined up, as the band is also scheduled to play Starland Ballroom with Glassjaw, Dillinger Escape Plan, and Rickly's main squeeze, Thursday. Roger Ricco & the Canha Family at the Cooke Center Academy: Success!

Success!

On Wednesday Dec. 9, students of the Cooke Center Academy were treated to a film presentation and lecture by Roger Ricco of Ricco/Maresca Gallery on a selection of artists who were born with a variety of developmental disorders and who have used the creative process to communicate in unique and inspiring artistic ways.
One of the artists in the film was Justin Canha and he was on hand with his father Briant Canha who followed Mr. Ricco with a special presentation of his own.
Diagnosed with autism at an early age, Justin began his artistic career at the age of 13 with the support of Arts Unbound, a New Jersey based non-profit organization dedicated to the artistic achievement of people with disabilities. Since the age of 15, Justin has been represented by Ricco/Maresca Gallery and in August 2006, Justin’s artwork was featured in Oprah Magazine. Aspects of his autistic and artistic life have been described in two recent documentaries, “Autism: A Different Way of Communicating” and “Sidecars.” In January 2008, Justin successfully made his world debut at the Outsider Art Fair in NYC and In April 2008, his artwork was shown at Art Chicago, the world-renowned international contemporary and modern art fair.
Since then, Justin’s family has been using his experience to educate and inspire others by presenting the trial and error techniques that they employed to first begin to communicate with Justin and then to develop his fruitful artistic career.

On Saturday, December 12 from 6-8pm, A.I.R. Gallery will hold a screening, open to the public, of additional video works that augment the selections that comprise the month-long Mother/mother-* exhibition. The films screened on December 12th are a critical component of Mother/mother-*.

The films are:

Ilana Rein’s Julie, a documentary shot over the course of seven years and edited in 2008

Marie-Francoise Theodore’s Rebel in the Soul, a stirring narrative that traces the connection between a contemporary African-American artist and a Georgia sharecropper’s wife lynched in 1915

Emilie Upzak’s Weaning Gideon, documenting the physical changes associated with weaning

Ingrid Berthon-Moine’s Midriff, a short film comprised entirely of a close-in shot of a woman twanging her tampon string to music.

Mother/mother-* is a group exhibition curated by artist and 2008-2009 A.I.R. Gallery Fellow Jennifer Wroblewski. The exhibition is of works made by artists within the years immediately following a pregnancy or the birth of a child. The artists live and work in the U.S., Canada, Scotland, England, and Spain. For the purpose of the exhibition, the title Mother/mother-* also refers to father artists. "Mother" is the term that elicits the great frisson when uttered within the larger art culture.

On December 9^th, 2009, REPUBLIC presents a film and lecture by Roger Ricco and the family of artist Justin Canha at the Cooke Center Academy High School in New York City. In the early 1980s, Roger Ricco established one of the first galleries in New York devoted entirely to American Folk, Self-Taught and Outsider Art and is presently co-owner of Ricco/Maresca Gallery, located in New York City’s Chelsea gallery district.

In addition to his own extremely successful artistic career, Roger frequently speaks across the country on creativity and art, has taught at New York’s School of Visual Arts, and in recent years he has become known as an authority on artists with Autism. Artist Justin Canha and his parents, Briant and Maria Teresa, will accompany Roger at this presentation. Justin Canha is a 20-year-old artist with autism, who is represented by Ricco/Maresca Gallery. His work has been featured in Oprah Magazine and aspects of his autistic and artistic life have been described in two recent documentaries, Autism: A Different Way of Communicating and Sidecars. In January 2008, Justin successfully made his world debut at the Outsider Art Fair in NYC and in April 2008, his work was shown at Art Chicago, the world-renowned International Contemporary and Modern Art Fair. Due to Justin having such a variety of different artistic interests and talents, his work ranges from pastels and paint to digital animation.

In addition to Justin’s story, this presentation will focus on several other celebrated artists who, faced a variety of different personal and developmental challenges, have utilized their unique talents to discover unconventional means of communication. These are the stories of individual artists with rare gifts and inspiring abilities who clearly illustrate the prevailing human creative drive and the urge to communicate with the world, even when a traditional means of communication has been impaired or is an unavailable option.

The presentation begins at 12:30 at the Cooke Center Academy located at 60 MacDougal Street in SoHo, NYC. All parents and teachers are encouraged to participate and refreshments will be served after the presentation. Samantha Katz of REPUBLIC Worldwide is heading to Art Basel Miami Beach today, to bring you updates on the world famous art fairs.
Attending for the second year, Samantha, as SUSHISAMBA's acting Art Director will be working on Graffiti Gone Global, presented by SUSHISAMBA. Taking place December 4-6th, 2009 during Art Basel Miami Beach. Curated by James and Karla Murray, authors of best-selling titles Store Front-The Disappearing Face of New York, Miami Graffiti, Broken Windows and Burning New York, the exhibition will feature a selection of work from today’s top street artists. This groundbreaking exhibition, set to take place in a 4,000 square foot venue in the Midtown Arts District, will be the largest of its kind in Miami. The opening VIP preview will take place on Thursday, December 3, 2009 from 7 PM to 9 PM at 3252 NE 1st Ave, Suite 101, Miami, FL 33127.

Exhibiting artists include: 131 Projects (Argentina), Aiko Nakagawa (Japan), Armogedon 2057 (Armenia), Billi Kid (Colombia), Crome (Miami), Cycle (NYC), David Cooper (NYC), Doze Green (NYC), Ewok One 5MH (NYC), Flip (Brazil), Ghost aka Cousin Frank (NYC), Jana Joana (Brazil), Lady Pink (Ecuador), Nina (Brazil), Shiro (Japan), Smael (Brazil), Sofia Maldonado (Puerto Rico), Suiko (Japan) and Vitché (Brazil).

Reaching beyond the typical white walls of an art fair, SUSHISAMBA has commissioned Miami-based architect HOX (Douglas Hoekzema) to design a sprawling, Brazilian-inspired favela structure for Graffiti Gone Global. HOX’s exhibition design consists of interlocking components of wood and steel that may be detached and sold as separate units, some of which will bear a signature graffiti piece. In addition, custom furniture designed by the several of the participating artists will be available for purchase.

In addition to producing and underwriting previous exhibitions such as GINZATROPICALIA, SUSHISAMBA has commissioned site-specific street art in SUSHISAMBA restaurants throughout the country. The recently opened Sugarcane Lounge in Las Vegas, NV features work from Graffiti Gone Global’s Brazilian artist “FLIP” Felipe Yung.

Bringing art to SUSHISAMBA is something that is a natural evolution in our whole concept and experience. We would only call upon the best talent to execute a dream that was sparked with the inception of Art Basel.

Cave In, Trap Them & Narrows played the new Knitting Factory in Brooklyn - Drew Kassl

Cave In, Narrows, and Trap Them completed a short tour of the east coast as part of Cave In's first trek in close to four years. The band was also touring off of Planets of Old, which dropped earlier this year in limited vinyl, and will be released on CD with an accompanying DVD in the new year. Culled from their first reunion show in Boston, the DVD features live footage of the entire show. Dig on a taste of that here.

The show also marked the first East Coast date for supergroup Narrows, which features Dave Verellen of Botch, as well as members of Unbroken, Some Girls (which featured Wes Eisold of Cold Cave), and many others. For Trap Them, it was their first NYC show since pummeling NYC with Napalm Death, Coliseum, Kataklysm and Toxic Holocaust.

Coliseum, who recently played Fun Fun Fun Fest with Coalesce, are heading back out with the KC band and hitting up NYC on Dec 30 at Europa with A Storm Of Light. Tickets are on sale.

Jim McHugh is our final photographer for 2009! Opening on Thursday, December 03, 2009 with an evening reception from 6-8:30PM, for his series"Let's Get Lost," an homage to Los Angeles and the photographer’s grandfather Jimmy McHugh the legendary songwriter who wrote the melody for this evocative, timeless standard of the same title. Jimmy McHugh also wrote “I’m in the Mood for Love,” “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, Baby" and many other songs from the Great American Songbook. Jim McHugh photographs the Los Angeles of that era.

McHugh's exhibit will feature selections from his vast portfolio of iconic architecture and landscapes of Los Angeles. McHugh's artistic vision captures a noir-like sensibility, using his eye through the camera lens to give the audience a unique way of looking at these old standards among the "city of angels."

McHugh has shown in the United States and Internationally, most recently in Paris, with his exhibit "L.A. Skies." Much has been written about McHugh's photography. Barbara Isenberg, author of "Conversations with Frank Gehry" wrote, "Jim McHugh captures a Los Angeles in a simpler time. He evokes in these luminous, elegant photographs the Los Angeles of our memories."

Of "L.A. Skies," Joseph Giovanni, writer of Art and Architecture for the New York Timeswrites, "McHugh specializes in the city hiding in plain sight. His establishing shots are the Art Deco pre-WW II buildings of L.A. - Collectively this group of images creates an armature of elegance that was once perhaps the rule but now escapes our modern consciousness."

Jim McHugh will be at attendance for the opening and he will also be available on Saturday, December 05, from 1-6PM at the gallery for "Artists Open Forum" to answer questions and discuss his work.

Success! REPUBLIC wants to thank everyone who came out to B.O.A. in the East Village on Wednesday Nov. 11^thfor our first Way Of The Word poetry event. Curated by Marissa Forbes, in support of the READ literacy foundation.

It was a remarkable night beginning with an interactive gallery hour featuring work by Edward Hopely, Jason K Tallon, Brian Van Remmen and a journal by Robert Snyderman that documented his journey across America.

Once in full swing, the evening transitioned into one uniquely memorable reading after the other by poets Aldrin Valdez, Khephran Riddick, Peter Ford, Davey Vacek, Katie Przybylski, Lonely Christopher, Robert Snyderman, Marissa Forbes, Brian Van Remmen, and Jason K Tallon.

REPUBLIC wants to thank all of the readers and participants, especially the jazz group Me & Him and DJ Jeffrey Tonnesen for keeping the good vibes rolling on late into the night.

We also want to thank the READ foundation and Bar On A for their time and efforts.

Way Of The Word anthology Vol.1 Edition 1, which includes work by the poets from the event along with many others from around the nation is still available for purchase.

WAY OF THE WORD

It is in the spirit of language arts that on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 REPUBLIC presents the first installment of its recurring “Way of the Word” program at Bar On A, 170 Avenue A (between 10th and 11th) in Manhattan.

WAY OF THE WORD is a unique evening of art, poetry, performance and music by emerging artists in the New York poetry world.

Visual Poets include: Edward Hopely, Brian VanRemmen and more
Slam poets: Khephran Riddick and Aldrin Valdez
Traditional poets: Davey Vacek, Katie Przybylski, Marissa Forbes, Peter Ford, and three founding members of a Brooklyn based poetry group called The Corresponding Society—Lonely Christopher, Robert Snyderman, and Jason Tallon.

Musical performance by Me & Him

Doors open at 7pm with a visual and interactive gallery hour for the artists, poets, and guests before the readings begin at 8pm.

Drink specials from 7 to 9pm provided by Bar On A

A short event anthology, featuring poets from the show and around the nation will be available for purchase online and at the door.
Portions of the proceeds will be donated to Reading Excellence and Discovery(READ), a foundation that promotes literacy by pairing qualified high school tutors with elementary students who demonstrate below grade level reading skills.

Jason Isch, REPUBLIC's charity coordinator, has teamed up with his photographer roommate to create a foodie website: Corner Store Restaurateur.

Your prayers for a food blog created and maintained by two painfully handsome, polished young gentlemen have been answered. The two blindingly chiseled chaps we speak of are ourselves; Devon "does this camera make me look fat?" Knight and Jason "is that my finger or the sausage?" Isch.

Their name is complicated but the mission is simple: seek out interesting corner stores, bodegas, "Deli/Grocery's" etc. and create gourmet dishes from their unique wares. Delicious delicacies derived from disparate delicatessens? (They sure love our alliterations.)

Cornerstore Restaurateur is their illegitimate brain child, a child spawned from countless scribbled-on bills, receipts, overdue student loan notices and, of course, a handful of inebriated arguments between its creators.

The boys aim to use your suggestions as their compass, so, if you have any bright ideas on where they should go/what they should cook (or if you just want to say hi) don't hesitate to drop them a line!

Cook Center Toy Donation: Success!

REPUBLIC joined forces with Techno Source to bring the students at Cook Center for Learning and Development $750 worth of toys. These toys are not typical toys that you can find at Target--they are not baby dolls or Monopoly. Techno Source developed these educationally based products that are geared towards children who can benefit from social-building toys. The award winning Rubik's Revolution, Hide 'em and Find 'em Eggs (mentioned on Oprah), Guess What I Am, and Smiley Central Studio were all donated to the ecstatic children. Each toy promotes interaction via team work and opens up communication and exploration through. The REPUBLIC members were able to present the toys to specific classes in the center, step back, and watch the children play and connect. REPUBLIC wants to express their gratitude to Techno Source for their donation because seeing the smiles stretch across each child's face was a moment that will not soon be forgotten.

We look forward to working with the high school children on an up-coming art event, so check back for more information.
